Why the iPad Is Not For Me
by Raquel @ Thursday, January 28 2010, on general
This is going to be one of those unpopular posts where my opinion diverges from a large portion of Internet-Using Folk.
For the last few months I’ve had to endure non-stop speculative articles, polluting the Internet, about Apple’s tablet. Now that it’s out, I’m going top write about it because if every breathing human in the planet can write about it even before it exists, I sure as hell can when it’s not just a fictional thing.
Keep in mind that this is not a ‘THE IPAD IS A HORRIBLE PRODUCT!’ post, this is a post about why the iPad is not something I would get. Me. Not you, not the rest of the known Universe’s inhabitants. Me.
Extra carification: although $499 would be something like 350 euros, Apple just loves pricing suff here in Europe on a 1 to 1 basis, so we’re usually ripped off when compared to the US, and the cheaper iPad will most likely cost €499, and that’s an assumption I shall be making for the rest of this text.
Before I proceed, I’ll give you a short profile of myself clarifying some things (and not because I already use Evax ;) ):
- I’m not a Microsoft fangirl and I’m definitely not an Apple fangirl
- I don’t have monetary issues, but I’m not rich or get spoiled with extremely expensive birthday/xmas gifts
- Thankfully, I don’t live with my parents anymore, but I want to gather enough money to get a house of our own sometime this decade
- I’m a gamer, not ‘hardcore’ (whatever the hell that means), but not ‘casual’ either
- While procrastinating on the computer, I enjoy multi-tasking (browsing/chatting/playing at the same time is normal for me)
- I love usability and am aware of it raising the price a little (emphasis on ‘a little’)
Having cleared those things our out, I’ll go on saying that I was expecting the iPad to be a lot more expensive than it was. So, I’m tipping the hat to Apple because, for once, they priced something remotely like their competition (and I was wrong on that regard as I assumed their regular pricing). One of the reasons why I don’t own a Mac is that the price, for the specs much higher than a PC with those same specs would be.
